Winter cycling tips

Having just returned from cycling up in the Whitsunday’s, I was confronted by the stark reality of Melbourne’s winter this morning. I thought that it would be good to compile a list of tips to assist our fellow riders to survive the worst that the weather gods can hurl at us. I’ll get the ball rolling with a few but please feel free to add your own.

Tip #1

Immigrate! Seriously, July in Thailand is great and Marcus would love to host you.

Tip#2

Don’t go outside at all. Sleep during the day and pull out the trainer and set your bike up in front of the TV. Of course you’ll want to stay carbon neutral so you’ll use your real, steel bike hooked to the power grid and pedal a steady 400 watts to meet the energy needs of your home.

Tip #3

Put your gel seat cover into the microwave but don’t over do it.

Tip#4

As the bunch rides past Velocino, make sure you’ve just completed your turn and swing off but don’t grab the last wheel. Slip around the back and hide your bike. Nip inside and enjoy a warm coffee from Kristy’s new espresso machine. Wait for the bunch to roll in and wheel your bike back around to the front to park it with your mates. Don’t forget to whinge about the temperature, crap on the road and how annoying it will be to have to wash your bike again.

Tip#5

Have coffee with Wazza just after he’s finished his morning swim in the bay. No matter how miserable you feel, the blue tinge to Wazza’s lips should bring a warming smile to your dial.

OK, I’ve got the ball rolling and now it’s your turn. Add your favourite winter survival tip.
